Veer Adds Exclusive Tattoo-inspired Font, Piel Script
Two years in the making, Alejandro Paul’s latest masterpiece is an ornate script font that celebrates the art of body type.
CALGARY (November 11, 2010) – Veer (www.veer.com), a provider of affordable visual elements that makes it easier to be creative, today announced several new Veer® Exclusive fonts including Piel Script, a script developed specifically for use in tattoo artistry. Other exciting new Veer Exclusives include Fan Script, DF Korolev, Cathexis, Raceway and Eloquent Pro Italic.
The premise for Piel Script – which means ‘skin’ in Spanish and is pronounced “pee-yell” – is the increasing use of script fonts in word tattoo designs. Piel Script captures the zeitgeist surrounding the growing trend of people around the world exploring body art.
“I have received a lot of requests to typeset and modify tattoos using other scripts I’ve designed like Burgues Script or Adios,” says Alejandro Paul, type designer. “At first the whole idea was amusing to me. I had worked in corporate branding for a few years before becoming a type designer, and suddenly, I was being asked to get involved in personal branding, as literally ‘personal’ and ‘branding’ as the expression can get.” This idea led to Paul the creation of Piel.
“There have been quite a few attempts at tattoo fonts, but as far as we know, no one has ever attempted to create a stylish script to use for tattooing,” says Joe Newton, Product Manager, Fonts at Veer. “While inspired by and designed to be used in body art, Piel is also great for brands looking to distinguish their product, packaging or ad design.”
Just in time for the holidays, Veer has also created a Piel t-shirt to celebrate the launch of this very personal font, which will be exclusively available at the Veer® Merch store starting in early December.
Other new Veer Exclusives include:
Fan Script – Another Alejandro Paul Script, the award-winning type designer is at the top of his game with Fan Script, a font that has its roots in early 20th-centry American calligraphy. Paul was able to place an artistic spin on the classic, sporty look by teaming its heavy brushsrokes with his own signature swashes. It has a bright future ahead as a favorite for sports identities, logos, and packaging design.
DF Korolev – DF Korolev is a sans-serif family by Rian Hughes, based on Soviet-era propaganda posters and named for Sergey Korolëv, the rocket scientist and designer behind the Soviet space program. The complete family includes 20 fonts – from thin to heavy – with standard, italic, condensed, and compressed versions.
Cathexis - By Jason Walcott for Veer’s Exclusive Jukebox collection, this heavy, condensed sans serif font inspired by show card lettering artist Mike Stevens evokes the energy and enthusiasm of 1960s Blue Note album covers. It includes titling caps, standard caps, small caps, and standard lower case, each with numerous alternate glyphs.
Raceway – The first in a small series of OpenType fonts by Walcott for Jukebox is inspired by the wonderful hand-lettering of the late Mike Stevens. Raceway is an energetic, organic brush script font that captures the spirit of hand painted sign lettering, with a two additional complete sets of alternate caps and lowercase, plus ligatures, fractions and assorted other goodies.
Eloquent Pro – An update to the popular Eloquent font, the real new addition with this font is the italic, although this release includes a new OpenType version of the very popular release from last year, combining the regular and swash versions into a convenient single font. This beautiful font is a much-requested digital revival of an old Didone style photo-typepositing face from the 1960s.
