Every Mean Tangerine pixel font comes with both tightly- and loosely-kerned versions.
About Pixel Fonts
Pixel fonts are designed specifically for screen use. In fact, they are built pixel by pixel on a grid reflective of modern screen resolutions.
To get the most out of your pixel fonts, realize that they are intended to be pixilated and chunky looking. They are not meant to appear smooth, the way normal outline fonts do. At small sizes, smooth curves are very difficult, if not impossible to render on screen.
When used at their specified point sizes, pixel fonts will always display the way their designers intended them to. Traditional outline fonts were never intended for screen use, and their designers never envisioned them torn apart and rebuilt with anti-aliasing algorithms.
MT Standard Pixel Fonts
Mean Tangerine pixel fonts are designed to be used at 8 point, regardless of how large or small the actual design is. However, the fonts will also appear clear and crisp when set at multiples of 8 points (16, 32, and so on).
Using pixel fonts in Macromedia Flash:
- Align text left or right. Do not center align text.
- Set all text fields on even integers, located in all respective X and Y coordinate value dialog boxes.
- Set any movie clips containing MT pixel fonts on even integers, located in all respective X and Y coordinate value dialog boxes.
- Restrict type animations to even X and Y positions using ActionScript.
- Embed all MT pixel fonts used in your Flash movie.
Using pixel fonts in Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator:
- Set document resolution to 72 dpi.
- Turn off fractional spacing.
- Turn anti-aliasing to ‘None’.
MT Deluxe Pixel Fonts
Mean Tangerine Deluxe Pixel Fonts represent a compromise between strict pixel font design, and the logic behind anti aliasing.
Instead of one shade of black, shades of gray are introduced into each Deluxe design, so curves and diagonals may be rendered with a smoother appearance. Some designers prefer the strict emphasis on clarity that standard pixel fonts offer, while others find the compromise between clarity and hand- crafted anti aliasing to yield optimum on-screen style and readability. Not to worry. Regardless of which camp you fall in, Mean Tangerine has you covered. Because unlike other vendors, Mean Tangerine offers both.
When using MT Deluxe Pixel Fonts:
- Set text at 8 point.
- Set anti aliasing to ‘Crisp’ in Adobe Photoshop.
- Never select the Bold or Italic style in your application. Instead, select the actual Bold or Italic weight in the font menu, if available in the MT pixel font you are using.
- MT Deluxe pixel fonts must be published at high quality when using Macromedia Flash.
- MT Standard pixel fonts may be published at any quality.
