Help : Searching for Products

Basic Search

A search field appears on most pages of the site. This is the fastest way to find products that Veer sells.

To search for products:

  1. Enter a search term in the field. Use descriptive keywords such as “dog” or “briefcase.” Multiple terms may be used to narrow your search criteria. Search terms can also include product numbers. See Using Keywords
  2. Click the checkboxes for product categories you wish to search, such as photography or type. (The most common categories are included by default.)
  3. Click the checkboxes for desired licensing models.
  4. Click “Search.”

Advanced Search

To perform a search with additional parameters or filters, click “More options” under the search field, or click “Search” in the navigation bar.

Use the checkboxes to choose the orientation, aspect, color of an image. Use the pop-up menu to specify the number of people in an image. These particular options will not apply to searches with in the type or merch product categories.

To filter your results by brand, click the brand names in the product category list boxes. To select multiple brands, hold down the Control key (Windows) or Command key (Mac) and click each name.

When any advanced search options are selected, a message appears above the options indicating that filters will be applied to your search.

Click “Clear filters” to clear all advanced search options.

To close the advanced search options, click “Hide options.”

Search Term Clarification

If the search term you entered has more than one definition, a “Search term clarification” box will appear above the search results.

For example, if you search for “China,” you will be asked if you mean “China (East Asia),” “fine china (dishes),” or both. Click the checkboxes beside the appropriate definitions and click “Apply.”

Search term clarification can be disabled in “Your Site Preferences” under your Account. If disabled, your search will include all meanings of every term you enter.

The “Search term clarification” box can be collapsed by clicking the “Hide” link.

Searching Within Results

The Search Results page shows products related to your search terms. It includes the same search options as a basic search, and adds another “Search within results.”

To search within the current results:

Enter a new term in the search field, click the “Search within results” checkbox, and click search. For example, if your original search was “dog,” you could search within your results for “poodle” or “-cat” (to exclude images that include both dogs and cats).

Related Searches

Search results pages will often show a “Related terms” feature. Click “See related searches” at the top right of a search result page, or see the “Related searches” options at the bottom of the search results.

Related searches give you the opportunity to explore ideas or subjects that are slightly different to your current search, but may still be relevant to your needs. Try it and see.

To perform a related search, choose one or more of the suggested search terms and click “Go.”

Note: By default, multiple terms use an “or” operator, so for more results, choose fewer terms.

Using Keywords

All products on the site have keywords associated with them. Keywords can describe the subject matter (e.g., man, dog), concept or mood (connect, happy), photographic or other technique (blur, pan, zoom, watercolor), and other attributes such as central color, designer, type style, etc.

If you get too many results, narrow your search using “Search within results,” or add keywords to your search. (By default, your search will only return images matching all of the criteria. See Setting Preferences to change this.) For example:

  • “dog man” will return all images with these keywords, say, 500 results.
  • “dog man walk” will return all images with these keywords, say, 100 results from the previous 500.

Note: This is the same as clicking the “Search within results” and entering “walk” after your original search of “dog man.”

You may use the following Boolean operators at any time:

  • and
  • or
  • not
  • +

These will temporarily override your search method under “Your Site Preferences” in your account. For example, “tiger or lion,” “tiger not jungle” or “tiger −jungle”.

Keywording is subjective. Try several terms to describe the product you’re looking for.

No Results

If a search returns no results, it usually means that your search terms or other criteria are too specific. If this is the case, you will be presented with one or more of the following ways to expand the search results:

Repeat the search using “or”.

Clicking “Repeat the search” will search again using your original terms, matching any one of those terms. By default, searches use “and”, returning products that contain all of your search terms. That is, all of the terms must be associated with each individual product. An “or” search returns products that contain any one of the terms.

Repeat the search without filters.

Clicking “Repeat the search” will search again using your original terms, removing any filters specified under “More options”. Filters can include orientation, color and brands.

See also: Advanced Search

Repeat the search across all product categories.

Clicking “Repeat the search” will search again using your original terms across all product categories.

Ignored Terms

If your search includes a term that is not in the keyword database or is misspelled, the term will be ignored. For example, if you search for “dog coller,” you will see products keyworded “dog,” and a message that “coller” was ignored.

Product No Longer Available

If your search includes a product number that is no longer available, the product number will be marked in red above the search results. If you require information regarding a product that is no longer available, please contact customer service.

Saved Searches

This feature is not available in older web browsers. Please refer to the site requirements for a list of supported web browsers.

The parameters of any search (including search terms, product categories, and filters) may be saved for future use as a Saved Search.

Saved searches may be run at any time, without having to manually specify the search parameters. This is useful when searching for the latest images pertaining to a particular theme or concept. Since thousands of images are added to the Veer site each month, using saved searches can be a very efficient way of reviewing what’s new since the last time you searched.
