Davin Risk is a designer and principal in Fluffco, a many-media design studio based in Toronto. A new media veteran with a background in interdisciplinary fine arts, Risk divides his time between commercial and arts-based projects. For the past nine years he has worked almost exclusively on projects with culture, community, and narrative as their focus.

What the judges said

JP : This would be an awesome billboard. But the message wouldn’t be very reassuring for drivers.

SP : Just turn around and try a new direction. I like that. Not when I’m driving, but it’s good advice for designers.

BB : Yeah - you won’t find success going straight ahead.

SP : Davin’s design has a lot of depth, visually and conceptually.

DW : Yup, unlike Marian’s design, the blurring here conveys depth, not motion. And it makes the plastic figure anonymous, so the viewer relates to her. Him. It.

JP : Both of our lightboxers are Canadian. I wonder if that accounts for the similar compositions? They both have a left-to-right structure, with two rectangles, and they both use blurring.

BB : I bet they’re both Mac users too, because neither of them took advantage of the sky image that looks like the Windows “startup” background - would that have been too obvious?

DW : Maybe they just didn’t want to get sued by Microsoft.
