Steve Louk Long Island City, New York

Steve honed his creative skills across the nation, receiving a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder and an AA in Graphic Design from San Diego City College, then pursuing illustration studies at the Watts Atelier in Encinitas, California, where he later taught. As art director for Tum Yeto, he designed print and web advertising for several skateboard brands, including Pig Wheels and Pig Wood. He’s now based in New York, where he is a senior web designer for VH1.com.

What the judges said

JP : I was drawn to the strong graphicality of this image. It’s very coherent.

BB : It’s a singular design, a strong texture. You don’t need to linger on it to figure it out, like the last design.

DW : I can imagine this on a t-shirt or a billboard.

DR : The black and hot pink combination is so deck it hurts.

BB : Deck?

DR : Yeah. Hip, cool, 2004. This decade is the O-deck.

DW : The concept is "My Place", but that doesn’t mean you should just throw the phrase “My Place” on there. Too easy.

DR : Boooring.

BB : There’s a hint at a narrative, but I think he meant for this to be a quick read.

JP : Steve is a web designer, so he realizes the short attention span of most viewers.

DW : They’re probably not even reading these comments, they’re just clicking through to see the winner...
