Trip by Eric Toth

The tale of the tape

Who? Eric Toth

Where? Tustin, California

Website? www.purepropaganda.com

After four years in the Marine Corps, including a tour of duty in the Persian Gulf, Eric now spends most days sitting quietly in a darkened room staring at a glowing screen, the only perceptible movement a persistent twitch in his right index finger. An itchy trigger finger perhaps? Evidence of Gulf War syndrome? No, just an indication of Eric’s affinity for computers.

A “boot-straps” kind of guy who claims to lead an "uneventful" life, Eric is a self-taught virtuoso when it comes to print and multimedia design. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Marines, Eric began working his way up in the advertising world designing print, web and video materials for such clients as Carl’s Jr., Jenny Craig, and Blue Cross, among others. Working as a freelancer under the name Pure Propaganda, Eric only sees daylight on weekends now and enjoys discussing all things related to movies, music and design.

What the judges said

JP : The curtain opening is intriguing.

DW : Like we’re having a world opened for us.

BB : But where does that world go? The tracing technique has merit, but does it add to the narrative?

DC : Interpretive memory, maybe. After a while, you can only remember certain lines, certain sights.

IB : So your brain compresses the info like a jpeg.

JP : There’s something Edward Munch-ian about it.

DW : The shaking lines do make me want to scream, does that count?

IB : Ooo, forget the starwipe, we’ve got truckwipe!

DC : The Autofont truck feels like an afterthought.

BB : But it’s good to see a longer type sample. And it rings true with this particular Lightboxing match.
