About this typeface:
A typeface originally inspired by a wall lettering in a small chapel on Crete, Greece. Despite it’s experimental character it works nicely in a text environment. Crete is perfect for display use where a feminine and elegant touch is desired. The unusual serifs and terminals add to the graceful appearance in the Thin and provide a more robust feel in the Thick. Both weights are metrically interchangeable, so text will not reflow when mixed. The accompanying Italics have several different lettershapes and therefore have, in some cases, their own widths. However, they sit comfortably next to the uprights. The names refer to the change in serif weight instead of increasing vertical stem widths. Crete features our Basic Extended character set including four sets of numerals, ligatures. fractions, superior/inferior numerals and language support for over 40 languages that use the Latin script.
Crete was selected as winner of the Granshan competition 2008 in the display type category.
About the designer:
Veronika Burian was born in Prague in 1973. She graduated in Industrial Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich, Germany. Before completing her studies she went to Vienna, Austria, to work as product designer. In 2000 she joined the team of the Japanese designer Makio Hasuike in Milan, Italy. Here Veronika’s interests shifted increasingly from product to graphic design and typography. The decision to focus more exclusively on type design developed naturally, reinforced by her collaboration with Leftloft, a graphic design studio, and her involvement in teaching at the Politecnico of Milan. In 2003 she completed her MA in Typeface Design with distinction at the University of Reading and is amongst other things currently working as type designer at Dalton Maag in London, UK.
Some of her typefaces received the TDC Certificate of Excellence in Type Design in 2004, were selected in the Type Design competition from Creative Review in 2005, and received a merit from the European-wide competition ED-Awards 2007. Her typeface Maiola is also part of the touring exhibition e-a-t.
About the foundry:
TypeTogether is an independent type foundry, founded by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione in 2006, offering both retail and custom made fonts. The company developed out of the desire to create an independent platform for publishing high quality typefaces and to collaborate on new type projects together. Hence the name. TypeTogether’s focus is on finding innovative and stylish solutions to old problems mainly for the professional market of text typefaces. TypeTogether also aims for excellent technical performance, broad language support and at least the standard OpenType features.
