About this typeface:
After spending his early years experimenting mostly with display faces, type designer Stefan Hattenbach now focuses on making functional text fonts, incorporating both traditional and modern aspects. Delicato is built in a traditional way. Still, some modern details have been implemented which classic type designs often miss. The primary goal of Delicato was to make a strong text font for books and longer works of text. This does not exclude the possibility of other uses. Throughout history, existing designs have often been the source of inspiration. Delicato is no exception to this. Looking closely at the design similarities can be found in Jeremy Tankard’s Enigma (specifically the lowercase characters) and Petr van Blokland’s Proforma (the stems in particular). Stefan’s goal was to respect these sources and turn his own creation into something new with a unique and personal touch. Most text faces carry a basic set of weights: regular, italic, bold and small caps. Delicato has been expanded a little bit further with a medium weight, alternates, plus a set of ornaments in order to make the family more complete and infinitely versatile.
About the designer:
Stefan Hattenbach (b. 1961) is an espresso-fueled art director and graphic designer specializing in type and logo solutions. After two decades in the industry, a third of that running his own studio, he has managed to keep his work strong and compelling via a dynamic balance of experimentation and traditionalism: a blend which has worked to the benefit of clients such as Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Telia, and Hennes & Mauritz. He is an avid traveler with a special passion for Italy, and proudly claims A.S. Roma as his favorite soccer team. He, wife Catharina, son Victor and daughter Sarah live in a sunny flat in downtown Stockholm.
