About this typeface:
Eastern Star is based on a hand-lettered alphabet appearing in “Lettering for the Commercial Artist”, an obscure book by A. H. Hunter published in 1946. The original font sported lowercase letters that were considered “a bit anemic” by designer Walcott, so he took it upon himself to “fatten them up” a bit. The result seems to have the perfect mixture of Asian and Blackletter influences. It’s as suitable for a Merry Christmas greeting as it is for a Chinese take-out menu.
