About this typeface:
In the past, Australian Type Foundry had concentrated mainly on display and handwriting faces. However, it was time to get more serious about the type of faces being released. Halvorsen is a response to the clinical efficiency of the German and Dutch sans faces (Meta, Info Text, Fedra Sans) which designer Wayne Thompson admired so much. He wanted a text family that was open and versatile but carried a more laid-back Aussie flavour.
Although the design itself has nothing to do with boating, the name Halvorsen comes from a line of elegant timber cruisers which have been manufactured in Australia for nearly 100 years. As a child, one of these magnificent boats was moored in the bay out front of his parent’s house, and Wayne would often admire it’s clean lines and effortless elegance.
About the designer:
Fascinated by letters since he was a teenager, Wayne Thompson began his interest in typography using rub-down lettering and worked as a signwriter, photographer, and journalist before settling into the design profession in the late 1980s. Now designing type full-time, Wayne has been fine-tuning his FontLab skills and lecturing about type design in Australian universities and colleges. Wayne’s aim is to continually learn about typography and hopefully contribute an Aussie flavor to the world of type design. Wayne runs the Australian Type Foundry, based in Newcastle, New South Wales.
